The fingerboard dots are a small detail, but on a vintage-correct build they matter as much as any other — and like everything else on the fingerboard, the material is what sets them apart.
Made from genuine cellulose nitrate in vintage ivory, these 1/4" fingerboard dots match the material of our trapezoid inlays and age with the instrument — because they're made from the same material the originals were. Cut to the exact pattern used on vintage 1950s instruments, they're the correct position markers for any period-accurate build or restoration.
Like our trapezoid inlays, these are made from genuine cellulose nitrate by Mazzucchelli — the original Italian material house that supplied Gibson in the 1950s. We went straight to the source to bring back the real material, formulated to the exact spec of the era. That's what lets these dots do what modern ABS and acrylic can't: age and settle over time, exactly the way the originals do, because it is the original material.
RetroSpec inlays are 0.070″ thick, with the pattern running all the way through the material to allow for proper sanding during installation. We've refined the color to the correct hue for an authentic vintage look right out of the package, and each dot is laser cut with ultra-smooth edges for a clean drop-in fit.
This is more than just a dot set — it's the material-correct upgrade that brings your fingerboard closer to true vintage spec.
