St. Helens x RetroSpec Exclusive Series No-Wire ABR-1 Les Paul Bridge - Nickel

We’re proud to present a true vintage-correct recreation of the original ABR-1 — “Adjustable Bridge, Revision 1” — the bridge Gibson used on Les Paul Standards from the mid-1950s through the early 1960s. This is the bridge heard on the recordings that defined the sound of a Burst.

Getting an ABR-1 right isn’t about appearance — it’s about mass, alloy, and fit. Original bridges were die-cast from zamac, a zinc-based alloy with specific resonant characteristics, and fitted with soft brass saddles that sat loosely in the bridge body. This allowed the assembly to subtly move and “breathe” with the guitar, contributing to a more open and responsive tone.

The saddles themselves were made from soft brass. The thumbwheels were thin and also made from soft brass. And notably, there was no retaining wire on Burst-era bridges — that feature was introduced later in the early 1960s. This bridge remains true to that original wire-free design.

After decades of studying vintage examples, St. Helens selected a standout original bridge and submitted it for laboratory analysis. Using that data, a custom alloy was developed to match the composition and hardness of the original as closely as possible. The result is a bridge that not only looks correct, but responds and resonates like the real thing.

Each unit is drum and hand polished for an authentic vintage appearance, with attention given to every detail of fit, feel, and function. This is the same style bridge used on Historic Makeovers builds where accuracy is critical.
